Sick of being sick

June 28,  day 19 I think.

My thoughts:   I am sick of being sick.  Face still hurts unless on the pain meds.  The pain meds make me have hot flashes and so sick feeling.  Can't sleep on the left side so it's the back or right side and now something is up with the right shoulder.  Arghhhhhhhhhhhh  driving me really totally insane.

Today is catch up on a bit of house work.  Thank goodness James is here to do most of it.  Cause I could care less.

Let's see what I look like today.

I have what?

I am 44 years old and have never been a vain person in my life. My hair is curly so it's pretty much gonna be one of two ways, little curls and kinda cute or a big ball of frizz. I despise makeup so have rarely worn any. There are a few pictures out there with some on me, so I did go through a stage of it. But I bet it's been at least 15 years!

So, why is it driving me nuts that my face is not working? Why is it, that while talking to the lady at Lowe's I noticed the second she stopped looking me in the eyes and starting watching my lop sided mouth?
Why do I not want to sit on the floor and tell stories with the kiddos? Why, am I hiding behind my hand every time I laugh or talk for more than a sentence or two?

I would kinda like to hide for a couple of weeks but I have many things I want to do. It's summer time. Time for fun with the kiddos and day trips with the family. So I will push all these crazy thoughts behind my head and go forward with each day.

I think I will blog about this little journey in order to at least get the crazy thoughts out of my head and off my chest. Will share pictures as we go along. For your sake, I hope we see improvement sooner than later or my words be not be so easy to read! ;)

Let's start with a little Information I found online about this thing I woke up with beginning Friday and getting a bit worse everyday. Hopefully I am at the worse part now and start getting better ASAP.

Bells palsy is a condition that causes the facial muscles to weaken or become paralyzed. It's caused by trauma to the 7th cranial nerve, and is not permanent. (for the record, I have not had any trauma so no clue why or how I got this)

How long will it take to get well? I wish I could get a SHOT and be well NOW.. But here's what the Dr. said, 2 weeks to 6 months. And here's what I found online.

Approximately 50% of Bells palsy patients will have essentially complete recoveries in a short time. Another 35% will have good recoveries in less than a year. (A YEAR HOLY COW!)

Regardless of the trigger, Bell's palsy is best described as an event - trauma to the nerve. As with any other injury, healing follows. The quality and duration of recovery is dependent on the severity of the initial injury. If the nerve has suffered nothing more than a mild trauma, recovery can be very fast, taking several days to several weeks. An "average" recovery is likely to take between a few weeks and a few months. The nerve regenerates at a rate of approximately 1-2 millimeters per day, and can continue to regenerate for 18 months, probably even longer. Improvement of appearance can continue beyond that time frame.

So here's how it begin with me. On Friday June 10th, I got up, showered, brushed teeth and everything was normal. I took my morning meds (for high blood pressure and diabetes) then opened a back of peanut butter crackers for my breakfast. After eating just one, I noticed my tongue felt numb. By the end of the day the inside of my lips were numb feeling as was the roof of my mouth. I thought I had caught something from one of the day care kiddos who would not eat or drink and ran a high fever on Wednesday. He saw the Dr. and it was not strep but just some type infection.

During the night I noticed it was hurting to lay on my left ear. I have ear infections often so thought oh great now my ear hurts. We got up and was out of here by 6:15 AM for appts. in north Atlanta. As the morning went on I begin to hurt worse and worse. I also noticed on the way that my eyes were watering like crazy and the sun was hurting the left eye pretty bad. After James' 10 am appt we decided to come back to Newnan so I could rest and maybe get seen at the Urgent Care center. I went in and the Dr. looked me over and saw nothing wrong. Had no clue what could be up with the tongue. She felt the knot behind my ear in the saliva gland. So said she thought that and allergic's were causing my problems. So put me on med's and over the counter sinuses meds.

On Sunday everyone was going to the house for pizza and fun. I got up and everything was the same as on Saturday but the ear pain was not any better even after taking 4 advil and I noticed as I brushed my teeth I could do a mean Elvis Pressley lip look.

Mom came over early so we could make a Sams Club run and as we were talking and laughing is when I felt like my face was not okay. So she watched me talk and sure enough the left side was just there. Your first thought is OH lord, I have had a stroke. But I had no other signs of a stroke. BP was good on Saturday 132/83. I had Bells Palsy 10-15 years ago. It effected my face only. I do not recall the pain in the ear or back of head from that time. So I said maybe its that again. We went on with our day. I felt a bit worse as the day went on. Totally worn out and the right side of my face begin to hurt from doing all the work.

I called to see family Dr. on Monday and he checked me over saying it appears to be Bells Palsy. So put me on over $300 of meds. Thank goodness for health insurance! It was only $130 out of our pocket.

My daycare kiddo's have been super through this. Noah looks at me and says "does your face hurt" and will rub it for me. Curtis has given me a billion kisses and I will gladly take them all and then some.
So onward we go on this ride.

Sorry for the long Blog today! Man, I can get wordy when stressed a bit. Who am I kidding, I can get wordy anytime. ;) Now for the pictures.

Taken on June 12th..
Taken on June 14th.  This smile thing is not working for me.

Nope not this one either..  I think I better stick to the no smile look OR wait..

Maybe this one will work..  LOL

8:45 PM  June 14th,
Just got home from first night of Karate with my new look and sound.  I am totally worn out.  Lucky, I only had four students tonight.  But that meant I had to explain it to 4 students and 3 sets of parents.  I found my self near tears each time I tried to tell them about what was going on.

Everyone was very supportive and the kids did great. I had Sempai Austin do as much as I could to try and save the talking.  Ready to go to bed and hide for a few hours.  At least once I am asleep it's off my mind for the most part.  Good night..

7:15 PM June 15th,
Today has been a little easier on me.  Coming to terms with how strange I sound and how to talk in small amounts in order to be able to be clear.

The pain has eased off tons. Took a pain pill at 4:30 this morning and then again just now.  Much better than the every 6 hours I was taking them Monday and yesterday.  Hopefully will be done with them in the next day or two.

My mouth inside feels better but outside still looks strange.  I can touch and feel most of my face now except for right around the eye area.  Still numb and cold looking.

Here's todays pic.   Notice I moved my bangs to the other side..  I feel like it hides the wide open eye a bit.  Oh and in case you ever have this, MAKE sure to cover your eye before washing your hair.  OH my goodness I about freaked out when I couldn't get all the shampoo out of my eye.  OUCH

Thursday June 15th...
Totally been a stressful day so has not helped much with my feelings. (people really just don't think about others sometimes) Up at 6 am to be ready and could have slept in and sure could use it the way I am feeling) That's a story for another time.  Life moves on and things are moving along.

I really can't tell a difference in the good way yet.  Hopefully soon.  Picked up some tear drops cause my eye is getting super dry.  James got straws last night and now I can drink a bit out of the right side of my mouth.  My best meal was today.  I had cream of chicken soup.  Oh yum..  GRIN..  at least I didn't need to chew in order to get it down.

To me, my speech seems worse but James thinks it is better.  I hate the way it makes me half to think about what words to use.  Heck I hate everything about how this makes me feel.  Went to town for a bit.  Not really gonna do that again unless I have to! Placed Karate order.  I hope she got what I wanted.  ;)

Here's today yucky picture for ya.

Friday June 17th,  5:34 pm
Oh looky there, I do remember the correct date!  I have been a pretty big mess this week.  Made my mind up yesterday that I may have Bells Palsy but I be darn if I am gonna let it have me.  I have way too many things to do so forward we go.

I stopped and picked up the eye patch yesterday.  It really helped while out in the sun and helped me SLEEP last night, so I guess it was needed.

We took the kids to see Nana in Carrollton and just hang out at the park awhile then for lunch.  It was hard to be out and see people watching me but hey if they have nothing better to do than watch me try to get cat fish in my mouth and it stay there then so be it.  grin..

Getting out did me good.  I feel much better right now.  Not normal but what is normal anyway?

Here's today's pictures and oh, I finished my trip report finally.  So read it if you would like to hear day by day what we did.

The patch and a little smile for ya..

No patch and just me..   we will get use to this..  we will we will..

June 18, Saturday Morning 10:05
OUCH, why is the pain around the ear and under the eye coming back?  I totally feel like I have been hit more than a few times on that side of the head.  I am guessing the swelling is coming back and that is what I am feeling.  I took the last steriod this morning.  The pain pill is keeping the pain low as along as I take it every 6 hours but I will not take it that often while working.  Doesn't make me sleepy I just hate meds.

Anyway, hope to see ENT next week to make sure we are doing everything we should.  I need and want my face back NOW..

5:00 PM,   Had a very busy day.  Feel totally worn out but really had an awesome time in town with Andrew and Nana.  Yep, got a lot of looks and stares but oh well..   ;)   I think I was able to lift my eyebrow a bit once or twice.  Every little twitch is a good sign to me.
Today's pic: after a trip to walmart where I swear it was 900 degrees!

Monday June 20th..  6:35 PM
I went back to the Doctor today.  The past 48 hours has been super painful.  Just touching my face hurts.  He still feels it is all from the Bells Palsy and just gave me a new pain med.  Not what I wanted.  Have not filled it yet because I am going to go see the ENT tomorrow.   Will see what they say.  Nothing has changed as far as the looks go.  Tongue may be a bit better but am so sore on face and back of neck I am not even sure what doesn't hurt at this point.   Wish me luck for tomorrow.   Need answers..

Tuesday June 21st.   4:20 PM
Happy first day of summer.  What a busy day I had.  Got very little sleep last night.    Had a 9 am appt with the ENT, who sent me over the the Neuro..   It is not Bells Palsy.  It is Ramsay Hunt syndrome and caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox heals, the virus lies dormant in your nerves. Years later, it may reactivate. If the virus reactivates and affects your facial nerve, the result is Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

Have already taken the meds that can make it not so bad but didn't get started on them for as early as they would have liked.  I TRIED..  SAW the doctor on Saturday at the first sign of ear pain.  For the folks who know me, they know it is unheard of for me to go to the Doctor so soon!

Now on day 12, I have been to 5 appts and 4 doctors.  ACKKKK  Sure do not like this one little bit.  The neuro changed my pain pill and also gave me samples of a patch I can use at night right behind the ear and on my face.  MAYBE I will get some sleep now.  So nothing else we can do at this point other than treat the pain.  Keep my eye safe from everything since it will not close or blink and rest.  I am sick of resting darn it..

Here's todays pic.  I took it about 30 min after taking the new pain med.  At least I am not crying in the picture!

June 22,   Day 13...  8 AM
I finally got 4 hours of solid sleep last night.  HELPS SO MUCH.  Still hurt but the new meds does take the edge off.  Having a bit of vertigo trying to creep in. Goodness, I really don't need that on top of everything else.  Will call and see if I can take the meds to help control that.

Moving forward again.

June 26,  4:50 PM
Well a few days have gone by.  Body is adjusting to so many meds.  I tried to come off a few this morning and was hit hard with the fact that its the meds controling the pain.  Turned around and went to bed and slept till 1 pm.
Guess I will take the meds until July 5th and see what the Dr. says.

Yesterday was quite an adventure.  Family get together the first time in 3 or 4 years.  Saw cousins we haven't seen in some time.  Was hard feeling like the oldest of the bunch of us.  Was hard explaining what the heck Ramsay Hunt is and that hopefully it will go away.  Everyone was great but I hated being the needy one.  ARGHHHHHHHHHH   goes so well with the patch..  ;)

Picture is from yesterday.  I tried so hard not to be lop sided..  Oh well.

We are home

Back from a wonderful Disney Vacation. Have tons to write about and pictures to share. Here's one of the highlights of the trip to get you started! We stood in line from 9:20-10:30 in order to get a spot for this. We were holding our breath they wouldn't run out! He got in for the last show of the night. 15 kids per show through the week and 20 on the weekends. So glad we did it during the week. Curtis is now a Padawan.. ;) May the force be with you! On Thursday, Melissa and her daughter Cady met us at Hollywood studios. Melissa was a part of the back lot tour! James could have been too but I wanted to work the camera so he stayed to keep Cady happy. :)

MY FIRST TRIP May 1982
James 1st trip
1971

I was asked by a friend why do you go to Disney every year. My answer was a quick, because I love the time off work and the magic of it all. But having a few days to think over the question makes me want to share.

Why does anyone do something they enjoy over and over? Like camping, fishing, beach trips, zoo trips, museums, etc... Good thing people are creatures of habit and do like to repeat things, cause if we didn't there would be NO NEED for them to even open.

Everyone's reason for liking Disney is different. For me, the second I see the WELCOME to DISNEY sign, I leave the rest of the world behind. My beds at home are either made or not and I don't care, the bathrooms are clean, the kitchen is clean and guess what I will not have to clean it again for at least a week! NOW, I get that same feeling when we hit the beach or we go to the mountains and I love doing both of these things as well BUT they are not DISNEY and are a different type trip. Disney takes it a step further for me. We prefer to stay onsite, which means for a week we do not have to load up a car and drive anywhere. Most of you know we are on the road ALOT. So its a nice break..

I can not speak for my husband or son. For the record our youngest son loves Disney world and I know he will always be a Disney fan. Our oldest son could take it or leave it. We tormented him with trips to Disney every so often for a day or two.. He's never stayed a week at Disney because we always made our trips cover at least two things when he lived at home. Disney and beach.

Okay back to me, lol I wanna talk about me. ;)

Disney offers me just about everything I need in a vacation, awesome resorts to pick from, awesome pools and water parks, shows where the whole family can sit back to laugh, rides the whole family can do together, a place where you can go and act like a kid again and no one really notices.. Okay maybe they do notice but I will never see them again so who cares what they think. 90 % of the time every cast member is HAPPY to see you and be a part of your vacation. They seem to love their work and they serve you in a happy manner... NEVER have I had to hear about how hard a life they have while checking out..

I love the smells and sounds of Disney.. Of course I have no idea how to explain that without just taking you to Disney. When you think about it I live a pretty busy life with something going on all the time and well at Disney there is always something going on. :) So it feels right to me.

I began my Disney trips back in the early 80's when my mom and Bob took me. Now that was a trip! To be young again.. ;)

From 1987(little James first trip) till 1999 we went about once every 3 or 4 years. Then Curtis entered the world and his first tip was at the age of 6 months old. Oh my gosh.. that baby loved everything about Disney world. His fav ride was Buzz Light Year/. We have been at least once a year since then except for one year we did Universal only. Which he also loves.

With every trip things change, we change, but we always KNOW we are going to come home and say when can we go back?

I know the parks like the back of my hands, we get through the turn styles and don't have to wonder what do we want to do. I know where to go and what we like to ride and see.. So off we go. Which brings me to another question I get often. "why don't you like roller coaster".. Makes me want to say to people "why don't you like snakes, or spiders or whatever it is that they don't like" .. We all have different taste.. I love Brussels sprouts but do not make you eat them if you don't..

When I was younger I would ride anything once EVEN if it was my cousins who made me ride it. HAHAA love ya Liz and Mark. They made me ride the scream machine at Six Flags plus made me ride with their half brother who had a broke arm.. he told me if I screamed he would hit me with it. Not sure if the ride or him scared me more.. But in any case it wasn't fun. I have ridden it many times since then.. I still do not like the ride.. LOL As I have aged I have had to give up some of my favorite rides due to health. I miss riding Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom so very much. It is one of my all time favorites but due to back issues I will not risk it. I love dark and a bit scary rides.. Dinosaur is that but with lots of twist and jerks.. My old body cant take it.. WAHHHH

I love fun silly rides.. The jungle cruise comes to mind.. I love some rides just because they are old favorites and what Walt had in mind.. Small World is a favorite.. Buzz light year where I can beat the pants off the others shooting up stuff.. Snow white and Winnie the pooh where the stories of my childhood come to life.. At the other parks, some of my fav rides are Spaceship Earth, Mission to mars, Star tours, oh my gosh there's so many too many to name.. Out of the 4 parks I think there's 7 or 8 rides I don't do any longer. It's okay there's so much to do that I don't miss them.. Well I do dinosaur. LOL That's what is so great about Disney there's something fun for everyone from little babies to grandmas and grandpas..

And to the folks who hate Disney, that's okay cause I hate football and racing and fishing.. Thank goodness we are all different.. Plus it leaves more space for me if you are not there! grin.

I have missed blogging!

Yesterday was a normal busy crazy kind of day, but as I checked in on facebook one more time, I realized how much I missed blogging. Not that I ever blogged about much of anything important to anyone other than me! So here I am reading over some old blogs and wishing I had finished trip report 2009 and where's my 2010 report and oh the things I wish I had placed here to save forever. Get ready folks, I am back. Will get something worth reading up soon. :)

5th Grade

Here's Curtis at 7 or so this morning.. He was still just my baby for a bit longer.. Bundled up watching cartoons. :)
All of a sudden he took on that older 5th grade look. WOW..
Gosh the summer flew by. I haven't gotten our vacation report up yet nor shared the pictures on here. They are on facebook. The report is ready to upload just need to do it.
Today I drove Curtis to his school for the last first day of elementary school for him (hopefully! hahaha). Just think I have been enjoying first days for the past 20 years. Whatever will I do the first year he is out of school????
As we neared the school I asked him if I could walk him in today since this is his last year at this school.. He gave me that look and said "I will be fine mom". LOL So I dropped him off at the door and was sad that he never even looked back. Acting so like a 5th grader.
He had a great first day and seems excited about whats to come. I enjoyed meeting the teachers and was excited to see he got a karate students (been out awhile but once a student always a student) wife for homeroom. They will change classes just like last year and have a total of 3 teachers for the main subjects.
Curtis wants to have the highest AR score this year. Let's see if he can do it. Had 110 last year I think. The highest was 300 something. So he has to push it a bit to beat that score.

Trip Report Day 1

The Cambas Family's 2009 Vacation with the grands

Saturday June 27th

I left here at 9 am and met Mom in Whitesburg.  We went to Douglasville and met the kids at the mall picking up Andrew and Courtney.  As Sylvia kissed the kiddos bye Andrew was so sweet and patted the seat next to him telling her there was room for her to go with us.  What a sweetheart he is.
Had lunch at the Seabreeze restaurant.  Mom and I shared the Tilapia (YUMMY) and the kids shared a kids shrimp plate. We were waiting on our food and Andrew said "hey where's there bread" .  I think we eat out too much.  :)
We picked up moms car and all of us came to Newnan.  The kids played in the pool while I got the van loaded.  Mom and I went down to our neighbors veggie stand to get her some stuff to keep her busy while we are gone.  After she left we just played in the pool and had dinner of hot dogs and chips and pickles.   Baths and a movie before bedtime.  The grands were asleep by 10 or so.  James and I both got some sleep but Curtis NEVER went to sleep.

Sunday June 28th
James and I woke at 2:30 or so and decided to go ahead and get ready.  Curtis was bouncing off the walls.   We pulled out at 4 am.  Andrew woke as we loaded him and he got as hyper as his Uncle.  Courtney just opened her eyes and smiled.  :)
We made it to Baxley GA by 7:30.   Made a stop at McDonald's for breakfast.
McDonalds
Pancakes
Saus Egg Mcmuffin meal
chicken bis meal
1 small coffee
2 small cokes
Everyone enjoyed our little breakfast and then went outside to play on the playground a bit.  Mom called me at 8 am.  :)  We sure were missing her already.  I called Billy to see if they were awake yet.  I think I beat his alarm clock by seconds.  :)  While the kids were playing Courtney looked at me and asked "where's Kncle Billwee"?
So we gave them their 5 minute heads up and then went to see Billy and family.

We made our family visits short and sweet this year.  Limiting us to about an hour at each place.  Enjoyed our time with all of them and wish we had more time.  I was not ready to leave at the hour mark but we really needed to stay on track in order to have happy kids on the road.
We were back on the road here by 9:15 or so.  On to Waycross.  Got to Bonnie's house around 10:15.   Enjoyed our time here and showing her our grands for the first time.

Loaded kids up about 11:15 and handed out snacks to everyone.  Snacked our way to the Florida State line.  :)   Curtis still has not slept.  He keeps saying he doesn't want to miss anything.  :)   I finally got him to chill and nap a bit so he could have fun at the next stop.
Stopped in Saint Augustine to show the grands the little house made out of a log that sits outside of Ribley's Believe it or Not.  We love this town.  We stopped here each year just to wander around and look at the shops and such.  I think we really need to take time to spend a couple nights here soon.  Kids got to burn up a little energy and then needed more snacks.

12 hours after leaving home we arrived at Hard Rock Resort.  Bellhop unloaded car and said all rooms were ready so he would have our stuff up within 10 min. of check in and showed us where to park.
As we are getting out of the van all of us were so darn excited to be here and poor little Courtney wet herself.  I had to laugh cause well Mom you remember the first trip you went with us to Disney and I was so excited to show you around.

Check in went smooth and we were sent on our way to our room.  I had requested near the elevators in order to save my old feet the LONG walks that can happen at these resorts.  We were on the 3rd floor (lobby level) room 3096. Our rate was for an obstructed view so I was a little worried just what we would be looking at, out our window.  But loved our view.  You could see parts of the pool and the ping pong tables and shuffle board courts through the trees.  I loved our view! The obstructed part was pretty to me, trees with pretty orange flowers of some sort on some of them.
We got our clear back pack ready to go and headed to the park.  We rode the water taxi over to City Walk then picked up the kids tickets and entered Universal Studios.  Andrew and Courtney were so excited just on the water taxi.  ;)  We rode Jimmy Neutron (boys loved this ride) Courtney and I had to sit in the stationary seats, saw the shrek 4D show (we all love this one), rode Men in Black (had to use child swap here but we love this ride), the Simpsons (another child swap one and a favorite), and Jaws (the grands did not like this one at all)  then ate dinner at
International Food and Film Festival
Fruit plate
pepperoni pizza
refill soda
stir fry beef place & rice
We got so much done in just 3 hours this night.  Was back in room by 9 and kids in bath.  We did not do a stroller for this night and poor little Courtney got blisters.  A couple of funny things said during trip.  Andrew kept asking as we traveled if I was going in circles.  He said he saw that sign already many times.  :)   He also made it clear when he needed to stop and get out a bit, he would say "how much further, my butt is cracking".  Curtis was a hoot.  He is always excited before a vacation but the excitement of showing the grands for their first time really got him wired.  He read, he took pictures with his DSi, he played games, he tried to sleep, he told silly jokes all the way there.
Andrew was totally blown away by the parks.  His most used comment all week "It is so amazing".  I wish I had got that recorded.  Courtney loved everything as well.  But she kinda just went with the flow.  She had her special moments at Magic Kingdom.  :)

I have pics on my facebook account if you want to see them.
